I drive anywhere from 1.25 to 2 hours (depending on traffic) each way to get
to work. Although it does wear on you...and your car, I have finally started
to get used to it. As another suggested, try and find a car pool. Otherwise,
invest in books on tape, or buy that "You Too Can Learn Spanish" CD set and
have at it. The best thing I have done for my time spent commuting, is try to
make it productive. Listen to NPR and dazzle everyone at the next party with
your international knowledge. Try it out, and see what comes of it. If they
offer a shuttle bus, take it. I divide my time between cars, commuter trains
and shuttle buses. It seems to break it up just enough to make it tolerable.

My husband works as a programmer at a "picnic table" in the middle of the
office. From what he says, it can be horribly distracting. Some days he gets
so little done at the office that he works for another five hours at home.
Between the personal phone calls, jokes, conversations and interruptions, he
has a really hard time concentrating. He did say recently that, after two
years, he is getting used to it. I couldn't work like that, but plenty do. Try
it out, if it doesn't work then ask for a cube. That way you can at least tell
your bosses that you tried their arrangement out first, and go from there.
Even if you know now that you will not be able to work like that, do it just
long enough so they can see that you gave it the old-college-try.
