Let's back up.

Word 2000. OK.
Created with Acrobat 5. OK
What version PDF file? 1.2? 1.3? 1.4?
Optimized for print, press, and ebook with same results. What specific
options within those job obtions were selected? Default?
How did you create the PDF file? PDFWriter? Distiller?

The more info you provide, the better equipped we'll be to help you.

::: I thought I fixed the problem by embedding my fonts, but no
::: such luck.
:::
::: The Word doc was created by me with Word 2000, optimized
::: for screen (but I
::: have tried print, press and eBook). The pdf was created by
::: me with Acrobat 5
::: and when I print it from Acrobat 5, I get little squares
::: instead of text.
:::
::: If I print the same pdf to the same printer from a
::: different computer
::: running Windows 98 and Reader 4.0, it prints fine.
