Can someone please tell me what is the market rate for articles in the States? I am writing medical articles for doctors, distributors, and government agencies.

That depends on:

-where you are publishing: Payment varies from copies of the magazine issue in which your article appears to several thousand dollars for a 1500-2000 word article. Needless to say, that last figure is extremely rare. Still, a professional writer could reasonably expect about $250-750 for an article of this length in many fields.

- the subject: Each field tends to have its own rates. I'm reasonably knowledgable about rates for writing about computers and software, for example, but I have no idea what medical articles pay.

- your reputation: If you're a well-known expert, or a well-known writer on your subject with lots of articles to your credit, you'll usually be offered a higher rate.

- the relation you've built up with the editor:In general, the better that an editor likes your work, the better you will probably get paid and the more assignments you'll be given. Editors especially appreciate writers whose work needs little copy-editing, who meet their deadlines, and produce consistently high-quality work.It doesn't hurt if you've met the editor face to face, either, so that he or she can put a face to your name; if you get a chance to meet an editor you're dealing with regularly, do so by all means.

Probably the best way to get an idea of rates is to find a market guide and make a note of what's said about the magazines or web sites in the field in which you're writing.
