Good morning-I wanted to jump into the fray and contribute my three cents
for the day.

I don't know if you'd call me a "real" tech writer if that definition means
I need education in that area. My degree is in electrical engineering and
when I graduated from college, I had no idea what I wanted to do. But I did
know that I loved to write, so when a tech writing opportunity came my way,
I jumped at the chance to get my feet wet. Admittedly, in the back of my
mind, I figured I could learn about the company's product line and transfer
to engineering when I got a chance. That's just what I did. At the end, I
discovered that technical writing was much more interesting and complex than
working as a project engineer.

So I stayed in the field and my skills and interests expanded as the years
went by and I've never had any desire to go back. However, I have no
"formal" training as a tech writer other than the information design
certificate I'm slowly completing.

I consider myself a "real" tech writer who loves to write. Period. I do all
kinds of writing and if I ever sell something, great. But it's not my
ultimate goal to write and publish the Great American novel.

Regards,

Elizabeth K.
