You're just a person choosing a job. We all make choices, evaluating a
number of variables. Money's just ONE of the variables. Sounds like you've
got a good grip on what's important to you.
Here in Boca Raton, FL (in the United States of America), I know tech
writers working for $23,000 a year, and I know tech writers earning six
figures. My own pay in the tech writing field has varied by tens of
thousands of dollars from one position to another, performing similar
duties.
$23,000 IS low for a tech writing gig - but it's $23,000 more than
nothing. And it can serve as a stepping stone to a better-paying gig.
Bottom line, we have companies here that don't pay well, and we have
others that do. I know which ones I'd *rather* work for, but I'll take
working over being out of work. YMMV.
And even though we're technically in The South, we ain't got slavery. Just
jobs with varied payscales.
