On my very first job I was a "temporary" employee with a 6-month
contract (i.e., proving period), though I was fully benefited. They paid
me hourly, but it may have been because of the rate they were paying
me--once I renegotiated a higher wage and became a "regular" employee I
believe I was salaried.
The HR department may have set up some sort of wage classification
whereby certain conditions/job titles/job grades determine
hourly/salaried. You call her an "assistant." that may be it right
there.

My company is insisting that my assistant, a junior tech writer -
degreed but fresh out of college, is to be hourly and not salaried. She
does professional level work - albeit entry-level. This is strange. I
have never heard of this. I have never been hourly in any tech writing
job - even at the beginning of my tenure.
Those of you who are not contractors, are you salaried or hourly?
