I want to thank the following list members for their input:

Keith Cronin
Sandra Tschauner
Marianne Adams
Steve Hudson
Dan Hall
Lorraine Butchert

Basically, you all confirmed my suspicion that changes to Word's default
styles are not going to be stable from user to user, machine to machine.

What I've done instead is create a custom template with custom style names.
Included with the actual document files will be some documentation ABOUT the
documentation--while not the main focus of this document, I will include
some "using the template/styles" information in the doc.

FYI, if our customers want to change the styles, more power to them. The
concern is not to "lock" the formatting, but to present the document in a
good "generic" manner and let them determine if they want to use our
presentation or their own company style. The consistent (um, anal) use of
styles in our documents will make any customization much easier for our
customers).

Thanks for the help!
