As for the rearguard, haven't we all been part of a "forlorn hope" at one time or another?

For a 15-16th century military euphemism for the advance-/rear-guard, or any group given a task that they probably will not survive, I find it comforting that it still has relevance today. Not only poetic, but nearly universally understandable.
