And for that matter, I saved a web page once as an mth instead of
htm file, and it had all the text and graphics encoded in one pc
disk file. Did it kind of by accident.

I just poked around and discovered that MSIE has a Save As MHT option (I assume you meant MHT), which it describes as a Web archive format. It does indeed save a multi-part/related file. I'm going to see if I can use this technique to construct and send a multi-part email. I'll report back if it works.
