Sharon,

This is not the answer you are looking for, I know, but it's a cheap (free) compromise. It works if you have your wits about you and have looked through the document carefully once.

With the cursor in a paragraph (but no text selected), you can type a new stylename into the Word style combo box. Press Enter, and, presto, you've created a new style that matches the hand formatting of the paragraph in question.

You would still need to page through the doc, find similar paragraphs, and pick the same style for them, which is still going to be a PITA; but it's better than nothing.

I think this list once had a post about a little tool that would convert a
Word doc with hand formatting and make styles based on the formatting it
finds in the doc. Can anyone help me find that tool again?

We have about 120 pages that have all been hand formatted and needs to be
converted to Frame. We REALLY don't want to hand tag this thing...
