Usually, "disk" does fine. It covers:

- Floppies
- All kinds of CDs
- All kinds of DVDs
- Exchangeable hard drives (Syquest, Jaz, etc.)
- MO disks, including WORM

There are just two types of mass storage it does not cover:

- PC Cards (previously known as PCMCIA)
- Tapes

Of course, if you use "disk", you run a slight risk of future
incomprehension, e.g., when holographic storage becomes widely used, so
there is something to be said for using "media" or "medium", ugly as it is.
