There was a thread a while back started by yours truly that yielded a lot
of good suggestions. Try searching the archives for something like
"reference book survey."
For what you're seeking, I find these two books handle 98% of any literary
issues I encounter:
Strunk & White: Elements of Style
Merriam Webster Manual for Writers and Editors
