Queue = line mostly when talking about a queue of people or line of
people, cars, or everyday things. That is, people are lining up to get
into the concert or there is a line of people across the street.
In the computer/software industry, you will see queue used often in the
U.S., such as queuing jobs for batch processing.
Queue is not unknown in the U.S., it is just not often used in general
conversation.
Once again, I have a usage question for our company style guide. In our
list
of European/US English spellings and usage, my colleague has included :
queue = line
queuing = queuing
My query is about the second: I never recall anyone in the US queuing,
although I remember people waiting in line. I want to double check my
knowledge, however, because all the US dictionaries contain a definition
for
queueing, it being a respectable English word and all.
