Curiouser and curiouser. I tried this technique on the docs that my last
tests produced.
The Word doc with the GIF file started out at 322K and shrunk to 316K.
The Word doc with the PNG file started out at 374K and grew to 382K.
And people wonder why (tech) writers drink...
