According to RHI Consulting's "Information Technology Hiring Index,"
CIOs expect a net 13 percent increase in hiring for IT professionals in
the third quarter of 2002?16 percent of those surveyed plan to add IT
staff, while 3 percent forecasted cutbacks. This is up from the second
quarter's forecast, which predicted a net 10 percent increase in hiring
activity. For the fourth quarter, 80 percent of executives surveyed said
they expect no change in hiring activity at their firms.
The poll was developed by RHI Consulting (http://www.rhic.com), a
provider of IT professionals on a project and full-time basis, and was
conducted by an independent research firm. It includes responses from
more than 1,400 CIOs from a stratified random sample of U.S. companies
with at least 100 employees.
So where should you go to find work? CIOs predict above-average hiring
activity in four regions of the country: the South Atlantic, Pacific,
West South Central and East South Central states. The strongest hiring
activity is expected in the South Atlantic, which includes Delaware, the
District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South
Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. In this region, executives expect
a net hiring increase of 21 percent. In the Pacific, 19 percent of CIOs
said they will expand their IT departments, and only 1 percent expect
reductions: a net 18 percent increase. This region includes Alaska,
California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington. In the West South Central
states (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas), executives predict a
net 15 percent hiring increase, and in the East South Central states
(Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee), they predict a net 14
percent increase.
As far as industry goes, CIOs expect the most hiring activity in the
finance, insurance and real estate sector, with an expected net hiring
increase of 19 percent. IT executives in the transportation and
professional services sectors are also more optimistic than the national
average.
