Subject:Style to style on a Friday afternoon? From:"Hart, Geoff" <Geoff-H -at- MTL -dot- FERIC -dot- CA> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Mon, 3 Jun 2002 09:03:31 -0400
Justin Ressler is <<... trying to convert one style in Word to another...
Why can't I just select the text and convert from one style to another?>>
Two common reasons: First, the new style you're trying to use is defined as
a "character" style (which applies only to subsets of a paragraph) rather
than a paragraph style, and thus, is only getting applied to the selected
text rather than the entire paragraph. Second, you're trying to apply a
paragraph style to a paragraph that contains character styles; Word seems to
be erratic about how it handles this, but generally assumes that if you
applied a character style, you probably don't want to override it. Thus, it
leaves the style intact.
<<Granted, this is taking place in a User defined Numbered List, with
several other styles within it, so it is not one of Word's more popular
areas, but still...what's with using Normal as a middle man?>>
Not sure why "normal" is working when the others fail, but the solution is
to remove any character styles first. To do this, select the entire
paragraph and press Control-Spacebar (on the Mac, Command-Shift-Z). Then you
can reformat the paragraph to your heart's content with no interference.
