I think you're right, it depends on how upper management views
documentation; I'd like to add that I think it depends, too, on how they
view or perceive a benefit from having an in-house resource for tech writing
and editing.
In my case, I review sales materials, proposals, white papers, etc., but I
also copyedit the many books the principals write every year. I'm not sure,
should a decision about downsizing appear, that the position would survive
if copyediting was viewed as a luxury instead of a necessity.
