>If you don't know the content of your >resume cold - or worse - gasp -
someone wrote (or rewrote) it for you...
When I was trying for my first full-time tech writing position, I had a
portfolio of materials that I had compiled over the years (including the
first user's manual I had ever written -- in 1986!). I showed the portfolio
to many people over the course of six months, trying to convince someone
that a math professor could write as well.
When I finally got my first break, it was because I knew the contents of my
portfolio by heart. When I was asked a specific question in the interview,
"Have you ever written...?", I knew exactly where my sample was. After
about three of these types of questions, I was hired for my ability to
organize and retrieve information!
I also sent out a billion resumes, but only for advertised positions. I
kept several versions of my resume on my computer, each highlighting a
different aspect of my experience. I also have some generic cover letters
that I personalize for each company.
Ask for the moon, but settle for it's reflection in the pond in your
backyard.
