I don't know if it's a fad or not. I've often wondered that myself. I am in the process of reading a very interesting book called "The Social Life of Information" by John Seely Brown and Paul Duguid. It talks about many of the fads that came out of the IT revolution and why they eventually failed or will fail. It has mentioned KM and tends to lump that in with other management techniques like re-definition and re-engineering. It's definitely worth the read.
