Re: Font Selection Methodology
Dreck, typeset elegantly and published perfectly, is still dreck.
That's right. The material can be read and evaluated on its own merit or lack of it.
And dreck
is the enemy of the techwriter.
For sure.
As an exercise in setting priorities for
the task at hand: Is it more important to find the right words to
accurately describe the process, or to present the words in the perfect
font?
In your argument, I detect some manipulation. When written material is handled badly it is difficult to read. It is subject to misinterpretation. In extreme cases it is illegible. To paraphrase your argument: Are the right words to accurately describe the process of any value if it is illegible? I submit that it is not. If prose is to be evaluated on its merit, it must be comprehensible.
OK, now that we've established that, we know where we can reap the
largest ROI for time invested, right? The penalty for less-than-perfect
font choices is far less than the penalty for less-than-perfect word
choices.
The argument you present is which has greater potential for largest ROI for time invested, functionality vs elegance. For whom?
Both content and appearance augment each other. I don't see the either-or of this argument. It is not a polarity.
