Most of the "studies," scientific and otherwise, cited in this thread are
OLD (even going backto the 1940s). They refer only to print media.

The real question, IMHO, is "what characteristics of a typeface (and its
context, such as color, contrast, line length, kerning, and leading) enhance
or detract from its legibility in each medium; that is, print, online,
film/video, PDA/phone, etc.?

That's a great project for an Information Design grad student. (Are you
students out there interested?) Might even be able to get an STC or other
society grant for it.
