RE: maximize, minimize, and Windows
My understanding is that it has to be used as "Microsoft Windows", all
together. Windows exist independently of Microsoft (whether or not their
employees ever look out of one). At least, that's the procedure we used
when I used to work there not too long ago.

words. However, I wouldn't go so far as a general statement
about the difficulties Microsoft would have trademarking
an ordinary term - they managed to trademark "Windows,"
didn't they?
According to one judge who is currently sitting on the "Lindows" infringement suite, Microsoft may not be able to claim Windows as a trademark. I think that the guidelines that they have always stated, that Microsoft and Windows must be used together to refer to their OS may be the legal reasoning for this.
