Hi. Lurker here.
I get the digest, so I'm not sure if this issue has been discussed
already... please forgive me.. and also forgive me if my spelling or grammar
or word usage or punctuation are poor. And please for give me for using
such a long string of "this or thats" just now.. and pardon the ellipses...
and how I'm starting all my sentences with a conjunctions... and...
(SEE?? THIS is why I lurk.. y'all are too intimidating...)
Anyway, on to my query....
So far, the "rules" of Style are working for me:
I like "Click" (but not "click on" - personal pref) for on-screen buttons.
Makes perfect sense.
I like "Select" for radio buttons and check boxes. Works for me.
"Press" is obviously the correct choice for a keyboard action.
"Choosing" a menu item - well, that's just good English...
My question pertains to tools.
One module of our software uses tools - similar to those you find in the
Ultimate Screen Shot Editing Software (MS Paint).
Does one "select" a tool, "choose" a tool, "click" a tool (since it is like
a little button and you do click your mouse to select it) or - and I've seen
this - "activate" a tool??
As it stands, we are in the process of updating our Editorial Style
guidelines, and this would be a handy thing to clarify now, before people
start asking...
