You guys haven't lived until you've worked in an organization that--as a
matter of policy (until I changed it by fiat)--inserted *Postscript* files
into Word documents. It didn't matter what kind of image it was: line art,
photo, graphic illustration, etc. What a nightmare. I had to drag them
kicking and screaming into the 90's.

Another big contributor to file size are objects (such as Excel charts). I
simply stopped using them, not just because they bloat Word docs, but
because they contribute to Word's overall instability.
