This is NOT what you want to hear, but if you're talking about full-time
telecommuting, I don't think it is as effective. It's okay, but IME it's
not EQUALLY effective, as you assert.

In my position I operate as a "hub" for a variety of remote and/or
frequently-traveling resources. They simply are NOT as dialed in to the
goings-on within the company as those who are here in the building.

To me part-time telecommuting makes sense, under the following conditions:

1. You MUST have high-speed Internet and network connectivity. 56K does
NOT cut it. You need DSL, Cable, or T-1. Otherwise it's impossible to
share information in real time.

2. Only a couple days a week. Your static-laden voice on the speaker phone
is not enough. Sometimes there's just no substitute for hearing somebody's
voice when they're walking past your cube, grabbing them and saying, "Hey,
while I've got you, can you clarify XXX for me?"

3. Be flexible. Some days you WILL be needed in the office, even if it's
not your usual day to come in.

These are just my opinions, but they come from the perspective of somebody
who has coordinated the efforts of a LOT of telecommuters. It can be done.
But it's NOT as good. And it definitely makes things harder.
