You could always do like my old unofficial boss (there were some political reasons between him and the customer that kept him from having the actual title) used to do:

1. Make an unreasonable promise
2. Pass the task off to somebody else.
3. Claim you need to leave early to buy a birthday present for your wife (even though you used the same excuse two months ago).
4. Go play golf.
