Recent versions of Acrobat (4 and 5) provide two ways to "Save as PDF" from Word (97 and above, at least) using PDFMaker. One choice ("Use Distiller") does the two-step print to PostScript and then distill process. The other choice ("Use PDFWriter") is the method to avoid. (I don't have problems using the "Use Distiller" option in Acrobat 4.)

However, although David's message offers a useful workaround to the original poster's problem, it doesn't really solve the original problem identified by the error message "The Adobe PDFMaker server cannot be loaded; please reinstall Adobe PDFMaker."

Jennifer, have you reinstalled PDFMaker, but continue to get the problem? Did PDFMaker work before, but has stopped working now? What version of Acrobat are you using? I'm not sure I'll be able to diagnose your problem, but perhaps with a bit more info someone more knowledgeable can.

The Acrobat gurus I know (including some from Adobe's
staff) say NEVER to use "PDFMaker" or "Save as PDF"
functions. They claim these are erratic and can
introduce errors.

Instead, they say to print to a PostScript file and
then use Acrobat Distiller.
