Thanks, Doug. I like it when people bust the usual arguments about ticket
prices. It's similar to the "if baseball salaries weren't so inflated,
ticket prices would be lower" argument. No, ticket prices are set to
whatever the team and stadium owners choose, which is based on what the
market will bear. If player salaries were to drop, ticket prices woudn't.
Sorry, can you tell I'm a bitter Montrealer?
Now, back to the conference. Here's a thought experiment with some very
rough figures....
2300 attendees (last year's figure)
240 sessions (again, last year's figure)
Some sessions have multiple speakers, but some speakers do multiple
sessions.
For simplicity's sake, let's say there are 240 speakers.
2300 - 240 = 2060 attendees paying full price.
Admission = $400 (roughly)
2060 x 400 = $824 000 in admission collected from regular attendees.
Say speakers get a $25 discount.
240 x 375 = $90 000 in admission collected from speakers.
824 000 + 90 000 = $914 000 total admission collected.
Question: Can the STC manage if it grosses $824 000 from admission instead
of $914 000? Of course, this doesn't include revenue from exhibitors, which
does not change. It also doesn't take into account any changes in attendance
caused by subsidizing speakers.
