I had an interesting experience over the last few days, demonstrating the
usefulness of routine checking.
I'm producing documents for a computer-assisted inventory system which
includes an ordering function. Last autumn I wrote a manual for a hand-held
unit which can be used for order maintenance from the sales floor. At that
time, the system could only support one order per day. Since then, a new
work order has added the capability of multiple orders in one day.
I was reviewing the manual, which I had not looked at in about a month and a
half, and I found mention of the fact that only one order would display on
the handheld because only one order was in a maintainable state on any given
day. I asked the project lead if this would still be true.
And that began a large process of head scratching and e-mails to the client.
Apparently, our business analysts and developers, and the client reps, all
failed to notice this condition. So I became their golden boy just because
I performed a routine review.
Sic transit gloria mundi, now back to the cube.
