No, WAY earlier than Ally McBeal - there was a series in the early 1980s on
ITV called "Fancy Free" about a council worker whose fantasies would
suddenly take flight and become real around him (to him, anyway). It was
awful, and didn't last even six episodes, but that's the earliest example of
the idea that I remember.
