There was a show on HBO some years ago where the beleagured guy's fantasies wereplayed out as cuts from old movies and TV shows. REALLY old movies (B/W) for the most part. Pre-dates Ally McBeal by a few years.

Yes, the whole imagination coming alive gimmick is totally derivative, starting as far as I know with Ally McBeal (Fox) and seen most recently in a failed(?) sitcom called Inside Schwartz, which at least had a common theme for his fantasies (all sports-related). Why in the world did Fox feel the need to make a pure copy? Too bad, because Andy Richter is actually pretty funny.
