Anita,
First, rent "The Tao of Steve" (a GREAT movie, by the way). Then you will understand my response:
I try to do something excellent--for someone else in the company--every day. (Bonus points for more than one excellent thing.)
I stay visible, even though I am a Morlock at heart and have always worked in the bowels of any company I've been associated with.
I do not rest on my laurels but continue to learn new skills and sharpen old ones all the time.
And, most important, I do not let others define my job for me. Instead, I determine how I can be the most valuable at any given moment and I define that as part of my job. Just as it is easier to get forgiveness than permission when you do something wrong, it is also easier to get forgiveness than permission when you have an idea and act on it to do something right.
Dick
