Well, I never made any money at it, but I've been doing creative writing a lot longer than technical writing. Going to grad school for the latter induced a four-year hiatus in the former, but oddly enough, now that I a) have a job again after four months of unemployment and b) have a job where I have to work *hard* as I have not in quite some time (it's a startup), I find that I get home and want to work on those old novel files once again. Go figure. I enjoy both, but I think I'm a better writer of technical manuals than fiction right now.

"What it means to be a technical writer" is that I get to do something I'm good at, enjoy doing, and can get paid pretty well for. Which isn't too shabby. :-)

<snip>

Is there anyone who WAS writing and selling creatively, who moved into
technical writing as a new challenge and to earn a sustainable wage from
their writing skills (poets don't earn money - just kudos and bacchanalian
charm....).

And if you are out there - what is your take on the field of technical
writing - and what it means to be a technical writer?
