on technical writers

Hi folks, (email being more spontaneous and less formal than an office memo
or letter)

Often on this list I have read, and I am sure you have read, of people who
want to move from "technical writing" to more "creative writing". Thus the
impression develops that there are many frustrated novelists, with half
finished novels and stories in innumerable drawers throughout the world of
technical writing.

However we don't often (ever?) hear from the other extreme?

Is there anyone who WAS writing and selling creatively, who moved into
technical writing as a new challenge and to earn a sustainable wage from
their writing skills (poets don't earn money - just kudos and bacchanalian
charm....).

And if you are out there - what is your take on the field of technical
writing - and what it means to be a technical writer?
