A long week

The phone rings loud and harsh, its note a toll of doom,
"Project X," a voice calls out, "must be done by noon!"

Seconds later an ultra-urgent e-mail comes across the wire,
It's from my boss' boss' boss, a four-alarm-type fire.

Interview Experts! Write! Write! Write!
The schedule's really getting tight!

Managers argue endlessly about a Project L.M.N.O.'s scope,
As the scheduled completion date becomes a dimming hope.

I've six documents to edit, and get them on the 'net,
By the way, number three is not revised just yet.

Use that trackball! Write! Write! Write!
When I leave, turn out the light!

Could I create from scratch all new templates for this doc?
What's that you say? Hurry up? It's nearly ten o'clock?

That software that you wrote for us? I hear them say with terror,
It crashes all our handhelds with a fatal, untrapped error.

Pound that keyboard! Write! Write! Write!
Or I won't get home tonight!

"Have you heard the rumor?" their faces white as chalk,
"Layoffs might be coming, we'd better work around the clock!"

"Project X was cancelled this morning" they say, their voices rising
"There's a trend within our industry economists call downsizing."

Check the website! Write! Write! Write!
Leave on time? The chance is slight.

I stumble to my cubicle, to update an instruction,
As well as re-write our manuals ten-page introduction.

I look down at my calendar, my thoughts in disarray,
Then I notice with a sudden joy "Today is a Friday!"

Take a deep breath! Write! Write! Write!
Leave a bit early? I just might.

Hope your Friday is a good one, and that
your week was better than mine!

Dan

True ease in writing comes from art, not chance,
As those move easiest who have learn?d to dance.
?T is not enough no harshness gives offence,?
The sound must seem an echo to the sense.

Alexander Pope (1688?1744)
