TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
> Knowledge Management is nothing more that some
> stupid consultant craze telling firms to do
> what they already should be doing -
> documenting their products and technologies.
>Except, nobody gets around to documenting the stuff "that
everybody knows." So, when personnel change, nobody knows
it anymore. >
What an old boss used to call "the bad curry situation". If an entire
development team went out to celebrate and ate a bad curry and were off sick
for two weeks, would that mean development was stalled on the project for
two weeks because the company couldn't hire in contractors because things
that "everybody knows" hadn't been documented?
<As with any process, we must ask, "Is it worth all
that overhead cost?" For most of us, probably not. >
It's not an "either/or" situation. The more structured your file system, the
more consistent and regular your pattern of file-naming, the more processes
and procedures you have documented, the easier it will be for your
successor, should you walk under a bus or win the Lottery or something that
means you are not available for a handover period.

The writers all stand around a cauldron chanting and occasionally tossing in
a small consultant. Unless stated otherwise, these opinions are mine, and
mine alone. Apologies for the long additional sig: it is added automatically
and outwith my control.
