I learn best by doing.

My advice is, think up a fun project that involves databases, in an area that interests you. Pick a db technology
you can apply and learn easily, and get on with it.

If the db technology isn't readily available and doesn't have lot of good, free, educational resources on the web,
maybe it's not worth learning.

I recently wanted to learn about using a database to build a dynamic, interactive website, specifically MySQL/PHP. I
made a "Norwegian random conversation generating machine". Well, sort of.
