Tom,
I've done this several times and have found the most successful approach is
to first teach them how to recognize the problems and then teach them how to
correct them. For example, explain what a roundabout prepositional phrase is

A book that has been absolutely invaluable to me is *Writing With Precision*

used in a classroom setting. It was out of print for awhile, but a new
edition is available. You can get it from Amazon.com.
Thanks,
Margaret
