One thing I might suggest to Eric is this:
Recruit a handful of people here to screen anonymous messages before they
are posted. The most recent anonymous post lacked the kind of clarity that
would have made responses helpful and meaningful. Another alternative would
be to not deal with anonymous posts at all. It is easy to establish a
Web-based e-mail account and subscribe to the list under an assumed name.
Anyone wanting to not reveal themselves can do that instead of requesting
that Eric post their message anonymously.
Another thing I might suggest to Eric is this:
Allow confrontations on the list, at least for a period of time (perhaps a
month).
I personally think that doing that would allow people to get and give
honest feedback -- feedback that they may not be getting now and are afraid
of giving. Perhaps "offenders" -- when confronted in public -- will amend
their ways.
