You could, quite easily, look at advice from the list as NOT being free.
It's a give and take situation - you get help/advice from the list and
'pay' by giving help/advice when you can. There are a lot of silent
lurkers on the list, quite a few regular contributors and a fair few
somewhere in-between and all have their part to play. Often there is no
need to delurk as to do so would simply be to add 'me too' but you see
new contributors piping in when they feel they have something to
contribute, not to mention any that respond off-list to queries. Each of
us, hopefully, gains something from the list (why else would we join?)
For unsolicited requests (following an article etc) we may well respond
out of the goodness of our hearts but beyond a certain point it's ceases
to be a case of 'helping out' and becomes a 'job' which warrants
recompense.
