Esteemed Whirlers,

I have been following the Frame vs. Word debate for several months now,
and just saw over the weekend the first mention of my sticking point. I
have used Frame and recognize an overall advantage to it for our
process. But after listening to internal customer concerns when I took
this job, I went with Word here because it allows easy electronic review
and integration of reviewer comments into the documents.

So, when a document needs to be reviewed/updated, we send copies of the
appropriate sections to their SMEs. Depending on the situation, the SMEs
either enter their changes directly into the document--in which case we
use the "Track Changes" feature to accept or reject changes--or the
Comments feature. This part of the process works very well for us, and
use of the system has cut way down on complaints about lost revisions.
As you know, converting docs from Word to robust HTML (plus
print-optimized PDFs) is a pain, but that pain falls mostly on my small
group and is down to a couple of days per major publication release.

My resident Frame expert (and Word hater) reluctantly tells me there is
no way for reviewers to perform electronic markup using Frame files
short of buying Frame for all potential reviewers in the company.
FrameViewer would allow others to look at the documents, but does not
allow markup.

Is there a cheap or free solution I'm missing that would allow us to use
Frame and still have electronic markup?

Thanks in advance,
Jim
