I have worked with quite a number of technical writers, having worked on
teams often and also led a couple of teams. I found that "most" technical
writers that I interviewed, managed, or worked with were fairly realistic
about their abilities... using the term "most" liberally to mean "more than
half". The ones that overestimated though were doozies, so they tended to
drive the recollection of the temperate majority out of my mind. I have
known a few insecure writers (sometimes I am one of them) who underestimated
their own abilities, but once encouraged, were able to reach a significant
level of achievement.
