Re: "go down to XYZ Street"

I live in Montreal, much of which is a giant hill, and I often say, "go down/up to Sainte-Catherine Street" depending on where I am in relation to that street. It makes perfect sense to me!

As far as east/west/nort/south are concerned, we have streets that are said to run east/west (like Sainte-Catherine Street East), but in fact, if you see the island of Montreal on a map or watch the sun rise and set, it's painfully obvious that what is called south here is in fact east.

In this context, knowing your audience is crucial. If I tell someone to turn east, am I speaking to a tourist with a compass who will end up in the Saint-Lawrence, or to a Montrealer who will presume I mean north?

Now *that's* annoying.

As for precision annoying others: Definitely. We (doc team) are constantly being told (with affection and rolling eyes) that we are "picky" perfectionists when we insist on precision. But when we make all the implications clear, no one ever argues with us, and the conversation usually ends with, "you're right, we hadn't thought of that."
