First, I would go over to the FrameUsers list - Tom Neuburger actually
contributes there. Sceond, not knowing Word very well, I would guess
the answer to your question, "Are Maker books like Word Reference
Documents?" is roughly yes and no. A book is what you use to collect
files together and treat them as a unit. Typically, each chapter is a
separate file in the book, although you can split large chapters into
several files. You add a yet other separate files to the book for a
TOC, Index, or any other generated list - you should be able to find the
generated list types in your materials. From the book, you then
"generate" these lists, update all numbering, update xrefs and imported
text, etc.
The way a TOC or list presents the generated material is determined by
the usual formatting procedures, plus some codes you put on a reference
page. Again, your materials should help you untangle all that. Once
you get it set up, it's very powerful and very stable.
6.0 made significant changes in book *behavior*, but the concept remains
the same. The book window is more modern (draggy, you can change file
names from the window, buttons on the window to perform actions, etc.).
Also, the numbering has changed a bit - 6.0 offers volume and chapter
numbering, as well as page, paragraph, and other numbering. Setting up
your numbering might be difficult to decipher from a 6.0 book. Finally,
in 6.0 you can do things like search and spell-check an entire book -
that's new. Otherwise, you should find the 6.0 materials useful for
your 5.5 version.
About changing filenames for the chapters in a book... In 5.5.6 or
earlier that's a difficult thing to do. You can't just go and change a
filename because all xrefs and hypertext links to that file from other
files in the book will break. In 6.0 you can change the filename, and
Maker fixes all the links. If you will do alot with books, that's worth
the price of the upgrade by itself. Also, you can create smaller PDF in
6.0, if that's an issue for you.
Hope this helps... But really, you'd be overwhelmed with answers if you
subscribed to the FrameUsers list - I strongly reccommend it.
