I second Bruce's very valid points. Running your own contracting business
gives a person a lot of managerial experience, often more than full-time
employees have the chance to gain. As well as negotiating. And budgeting.
And proposing. And dealing with all kinds of people, in all kinds of fluid
relationships.
Scratch most contractors and under the surface you'll find someone who once
or twice or three times held a full-time staff position, and maybe even
managed a Tech Pubs department. I find that many people, myself included,
move back and forth between contractor and full-time employee as
opportunities open up for us.

Not necessarily. As a contractor, I've hired sub-contractors. In fact, to
give an idea of how quickly contractors can gain experience, I first hired a
sub-contractor after I had been working as a technical writer for about
twenty months.
In addition, in almost every position, I have had to create and keep the
time table, write the contract, set the deliverables, and oversee the review
process. In many cases, I've set up documentation from scratch, designed
templates and even created style guides.
I can name at least a dozen contractors with a similar background. So, once
again, generalizations about contractors don't necessarily hold.
