By "Originally" you may mean it came in to use in that era. I don't think

I went to grade school in the 1950's ('50s) and we were taught to use the
apostrophe. I'm assuming that at that time it was the accepted format. So,
when I use the term "originally" I am meaning "original" to me (in my
youth). Does anyone know if it was used without the apostrophe before then
('40s, 30's, etc.)? :)
