I forgot to add this to the previous post: where tests are involved, one must be sure not to overlook the obvious.
After I was hired for my first technical editing job, I was given an article to edit, as a test. There seemed to be very little wrong with grammar, punctuation, or usage, but I felt there were signicant conceptual and logical flaws, and I made copious notes throughout the manuscript.
I returned it to my manager, rather proud of my thorough work.
He looked it over for a few minutes and announced that I had failed the test.
I was astonished, and asked him why.
It turned out that every single instance of the word "responsibility" was misspelled, with the third "i" missing. The text was set in a sans serif font, which made it more difficult to spot. *That* had been the whole point of the exercise: to see if the editor would see that "responsibility" was always misspelled!
