Don't some programmers write code that is less impressive and
professional than others, or do you assume that all programmers write
equally great code. Isn't it possible that the person has had an
experience with a technical writer who didn't produce professional
output?

I don't consider that comment demeaning. If I were you, I would have
been pleased with the compliment and said thank you.
