Apparently ten, twenty years from now when those my age are really qualified for those Senior Tech Writer gigs, there's going to be another Catch-22 - have to be old enough to *be* senior but heaven help you if you look it?

This is largely true, but the middle-aged have some advantages over the young: they have more contacts, and have had more years to develop the deviousness to take advantage of them. Often, too, they have more sidelines they can develop to increase their chances of employability.

I know of a number of middle-aged writers on the list who have survived for the last few months by doing various bits of contracting. It's harder on the nerves than a full-time job, and more than one person has expressed annoyance that, with all their experience, they have to scramble, but they do seem able to keep some sort of income coming in.

By contrast, it's the newer writers - those with less than about three years of experience - who seem to be having the really hard time. And I certainly don't envy those just starting out.
