As it happens, CNET, Computerworld, and Microsoft, to name just two rather
prominent organizations, have used the term "lingua franca" in recent
articles for technical and lay audiences, as a Google search will show. I
agree with Kelley that it was entirely appropriate for her audience. "Lingua
franca" is quite commonly used these days in the literature of international
business, economics, and technology, it would appear. The following samples
are of its use only in the sphere of technology:
